we were free this whole weekend to do whatever we wanted, so we were able to get some sightseeing in. some of us met for bfast at our hotel and then we headed out to the bund.....the bund is about 2 blocks from our hotel and it is right on the huangpu river. once again it was rainy, humid and there were low clouds. i know it will be even hotter when the clouds disappear...but it is quite odd to sweat while it is raining. we walked along the bund and took some pictures. random people were coming up to us to take pictures with all of us..there were 5 of us together. it was so odd. even when we were taking pics with ppl, some ppl would take pics as they walked by....so bizarre. i guess we are celebrities. hahaha.
on the bund
i got yelled at for walking on the grass
looking over at pudong, where i will be working
on the bund
mascot of the world expo
random workout area we found in a neighborhood
since it was raining, the view across the river wasnt that great, so we decided to hope on the metro and head over to the french concession. this area is very popular for expats to live in. we just wandered all over the place and didnt really look at our map. we came across an apartment area..they had this random gym in the courtyard, so we played around on it. lots of cute stores, bars and restaurants. at this point we were exhausted. yes it was still raining....but it was about 85 degrees with 100% humidity....so it is not fun sweating the whole time. we went back to the hotel and we all took naps. sat night we were invited to a gallery to see some pics from right after the cultural revolution. the pics were super cool. we then got invited to go to dinner with some ppl from the gallery. i met a guy named ben from the shanghai expat website and he works at the gallery, so it was cool to meet him. they took us to hot pot. u order meat, veggies, noodles, etc and then u pick types of broth to cook your food in. it was really good!!!!

at hot pot
sunday it was pouring down rain!!! some ppl wanted to go find the walmart that was over in pudong. pudong is across the river. amy and i will actually be working there in a few weeks. since it was pouring and we didnt want to walk outside and find the walmart, we went into the mall. now this mall isnt just any mall, it is the LARGEST in asia. it doesn't look that big from the outside, but when u walk in...omg! huge! it was stories and i don't even know how far back it goes. i was stoked b/c there was an h&m there, which means they have normal sizes and i can get clothes here :) after a bit, we were all hungry....so we went to a thai place. there were 10 of us and we were getting lots of stares when we sat down...guess we have to get used to it. we went down to lotus, which is a superkmarket. i got 4 bananas for equivalent to 75 cents....awesome. oh and they have kinder bueno bars...stoked!! oh and chin has magnum ice cream bars. how does china have magnums and the US doesn't??? i dont get it! we walked around a bit more...but most of us were tired, so we headed back. we all bought super cheap beers at the local store across the street and watched the england/germany game in my room. one of the guys i work with is from england and he said that bbc radio broadcasts all the games, so we just out the game on mute and listened to it on my computer. so much better.

this is east nanjing road, where the metro is located right near our hotel. it is a crazy street!
pearl orient tower. u can go up in it, but its not worth the money when it is cloudy!
so far so good here. i feel like i have known my co-workers forever. i have really lucked out!!! oh and i have seen lots of babies with the split pants and no diapers. gotta get some pics!
